5 Coffee Gadgets To Try

Monday, November 10, 2014

More and more people are trading in lacklustre instant coffee – or expensive trips to high street coffee chains – to make high-quality espressos from the comfort of their own home.

In the long run, this is a much cheaper – and way more enjoyable – way to savour the delights of coffee.

And to make your home coffee making routine even more tasty, efficient and fun, here are five cool coffee gadgets and gizmos that you can try out.

Let us know how you get on – or if we have missed any must-try gadgets off the list!

A Burr Grinder

When making ‘real’ coffee from an espresso machine, the quality of the coffee will usually depend a great deal on the quality of the ground beans.

One of the best options for grinding beans is a ‘burr’ rather than ‘blade’ grinder.

A burr grinder will produce a more ‘even’ grain size – which will resist the high pressure of the espresso machine.

A Knock Out Box

Although they are often quite difficult to procure (trust us, we’ve tried!), a decent ‘knock out box’ will allow you extract a little cake of use coffee grounds after using your espresso machine.

But why would you want to do that?

Well, recycled coffee grounds can be beneficial for your garden, nourishing the soil, plants and trees.

The Aeropress

Invented in 2005, the Aeropress is a convenient and highly portable cylindrical device for brewing espresso-strength coffee.

It’s fast, simple, effective, and, most importantly, yields absolutely delicious coffee!

The Aeropress gadget is simply perfect if you’re camping or at a hotel with no coffee making facilities.

An Espresso Tamper

A good quality espresso tamper will help make the ‘squidging’ procedure – that is putting the ground coffee into the bowl – as efficient as possible.

While espresso tampers are undoubtedly epitome of cool and will make you the envy of all your coffee drinking pals, they are very, very expensive.

This is a luxury item, not an essential one!

A La Cupola Coffee Maker

A moka coffee maker – such as the La Cupola by Alessi – is an essential bit of a kit for anyone who is truly serious about making amazing coffee (or Italian).

These types of coffee makers are very popular on the continent – and it’s not hard to see why!

They yield a distinctive, delicious, strong (often bitter) brew and are probably the closest you can get to real espresso without the aid of a machine.
