The First Ever Space Coffee!

Friday, May 15, 2015

Last month we posted an article on the Cafe2U Blog which looked at an attempt to send the first ever espresso machine into outer space.

Back in May this venture still had a giant question mark hanging over it – as many similar efforts in the past had gone awry.

(For example, the same coffee machine had been expected to arrive on a rocket last year, but the SpaceX rocket which was carrying it exploded!)

However, we can now confirm that this latest attempt has been a resounding success.

Yes – those lucky astronauts at the International Space Station (ISS) have now consumed history’s first ever space coffee!

The coffee was made using a specially manufactured Espresso machine, which has now been dubbed the ISSpresso machine (geddit?).

Last week Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, one of the until-now-caffeine-starved crew members, tweeted her delight about the ISSpresso machine (you can see her tweets here and here - and while you’re at it you can follow us on Twitter as well!).

Notably, Cristoforetti, who was sent up into space by the European Space Agency, included in her tweets references the original Star Trek television series – in particular this exchange here.

The new space-age coffee machine, which has been the joint effort of the Italian Space Agency, engineering firm Argotec and coffee company Lavazza, was built using new-fangled, special technology to get round a conventional, Earth-bound reliance on gravity.

Currently, NASA has only sent up 20 coffee capsules – and, as of yet, they still have not figured out how to dispose of the used capsules.

Indeed, due to the fact that each coffee capsule is individually wrapped, this creates a load of rubbish that the space agency is not able to throw away.

Significantly, the braniacs behind this latest venture believe that the same technologies behind the ISSpresso machine will eventually be used for making and consuming other important things, such as medicine.

Over to you

What do you think about the latest development of space coffee?

If you were an astronaut orbiting Earth, would you be able to live without your regular Cafe2U fix?

Should we already be starting work on a mobile coffee cart come rocket ship?

As always, remember to get in touch with us here at the Café2U Blog with your comments and questions – we love finding out what our readers have to say!
