After all, coffee shops have a 7% growth rate worldwide, making them one of the fastest growing industries. Moreover, IBS research estimates that the Australian coffee business alone is worth about $5 billion in revenue. However, did you know that coffee shops also help support communities in third world countries? Thanks to several programs and initiatives, such as a coffee cooperative in Costa Rica, the coffee industry may not only be one of the most successful business ideas, but also one of the most charitable.

The village of Biolley, a rural community located in the Talamanca Mountains of Costa Rica, offers few opportunities for its residents. This problem has raged for years, with many of the area's men and boys choosing to relocate to the capital, San Jose, or the United States to find work. In response, the women of Biolley created a women-only coffee cooperative to help support themselves and their family. Started in 1997, their project, called the Association of Organized Women of Biolley, became one of the first women-run coffee businesses in Costa Rica.

Initially, the women struggled with finding sufficient land, earning the support of the town's men, and even roasting the beans. Over time, however, they were able to buy their own mill and start purchasing beans of the Arabica variety, the world's most popular type of coffee, from local farmers. Their first high quality batch was sold to illycaffe, an Italian company that now buys 80% of their raw milled beans. These sales have made the program one of the most successful business ideas to come from the community, allowing the women to provide a livelihood for local families, as well as education and healthcare for the community: recently, Biolley has been able to build both a school and a medical clinic, thanks to their coffee production.

Today, many communities in third world countries have realized that the coffee industry offers plenty of new small business opportunities for their residents, allowing them to provide a better present and future for their children. However, these communities cannot implement these strategies without the help of coffee importers and coffee shops around the world that buy their products. Aerosmith's Drummer Plans to Join the Coffee Industry

The success of the coffee industry reflects this, with an estimated $100 million U.S. grossed around the world. For this reason, it appears that even rock stars are now opening up coffee shops: Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer recently announced that he plans to open up a cafe in Boston in 2015.

Now a member of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, Kramer has worn a number of different hats over his 46-year musical career: in addition to his time as a drummer and songwriter for Aerosmith, he has also published a memoir called "Hit Hard: A Story of Hitting Rock Bottom at the Top." In 2013, however, he took the unusual step of forging a partnership with Comfort Foods, Inc., who agreed to roast, package and distribute a coffee blend for Kramer. Called Rockin' and Roastin' Coffee, the organic whole bean coffee was almost immediately available in 2,000 grocery stores across the United States. Six months after the blend was released, Kramer had broken $1 million in sales.

Now, Kramer is in the process of opening his first coffee shop in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Called Joey Kramer's Rockin' and Roastin' Cafe, the cafe will reportedly include a rock 'n' roll feel and play classic music videos and concert footage on its television screens. The 1,500 foot location has yet to be constructed, but is projected to open in 2015.

Unfortunately, those of us who have yet to win a slew of Grammys and Billboard Music Awards likely won't be able to join the coffee industry by convincing a company to produce a signature coffee blend; instead, success depends more on finding the best coffee franchise opportunities to help launch your business and give you needed brand recognition. The best coffee franchises not only have a great reputation for both their coffee and their company, but also provide valuable training that can help their franchisees thrive. Starbucks Joins the Mobile Cafe Industry

Currently, an estimated 14 billion espresso coffees are consumed every year around the world, and while Finland consumes the most coffee per capita, there are over 6,000 coffee businesses throughout Australia, ranging from traditional coffee franchises and shops to coffee vans. This means that there are numerous opportunities for creative entrepreneurs to test out their ideas for a successful business. However, the coffee industry now seems to be moving in an interesting direction: instead of using set locations that customers can visit, many companies now seem to be trying to bring everyone's favorite warm drink to your front door.

In their earnings conference call on Thursday, October 30, Starbucks' CEO Howard Schultz announced that the coffee chain plans to begin a food and beverage delivery service by late 2015. Available to members of Starbucks' loyalty program, the service will reportedly begin in a few select markets in the United States before gradually spreading to other locations. Customers will be able to order and pay for their coffee delivery using a mobile app which is set to debut in Portland, Ore. in November 2014. Long known for their rapid spread across a number of countries, this new business decision will likely appeal to a variety of customers who will value the convenience of having a coffee delivery only a few clicks away.

But while Starbucks' new plan may seem groundbreaking, they are far from the first company to offer a mobile alternative to the traditional coffee shop: espresso mobile cafes and coffee vans are extremely popular throughout Australia and other parts of the world, creating a trend that Starbucks is likely now eager to follow. Could this mean that espresso mobile cafes offer a potentially successful small business opportunity? Only time will tell.
